ancient-howls-of-dawning-fury-digipak-cd-poster-included
Ancient Howls of Dawning Fury digipak CD (+ poster included)

In February, 2001, Nachtmystium entered a small home studio owned by Blake Judd's uncle, Scott Judd, whom played in an indierock band at the time (called Magnetosphere) He and his other guitarist from Magnetosphere, Allen Rendel, had recently purchased what was then the 'top of the line' digital home recording unit from Yamaha (i think...could be wrong on the brand) This unit was relatively easy to navigate, despite being slower than you could ever imagine. It had a built-in CD burner, which at the time was the coolest thing ever. The two of them had recorded some demos for Magnetosphere, and their drummers gear was permanently stationed there. He was kind enough to let Pat "Noctis" McCormick bang on it for a day or two in February, 2000 where we recorded 6 songs. This recording session - had it been successful to our standards - was to be the 'Reign of the Malicious' album.

We were displeased with the fact we only had 6 tracks, but more importantly, we didn't like the way they sounded. We were total amateurs across the board, band & "recording staff". We didn't know how to record a black metal album (yet), but we were 100% sure of what we knew we did and didn't want ours to sound like. These 6 cuts didn't satisfy our conservative, elitist black metal canon at the time. So - aside from a single track ("Goatblood Sabbath", which is on the 'The First Attacks: Demos 2000 - 2001' compilation released in 2003 and currently owned & distributed by Earache Records - which is why that track does not appear on this CD collection of the remaining materials!) this is that recording. I've (Blake Judd) done some "mastering" to try and clean up the sound. The only surviving master of these recordings from that session were horrible, early-digital-era Mp3s that were of the lowest quality (and you can still hear a bit of the notorious "cymbal flanging" that was so notoriously hated by musicians during the growing pains days of digital releases) That's part of why I didn't release them for all this time. But in 2018, Pat "Noctis" McCormick and I had gotten back in touch briefly for the first time in many years, and he mentioned he still had a safely-stored CDr of those Mp3s that were theoretically releasable. Those were the files I edited / mastered a bit and they're here to enjoy in this ultra-limited 100 unit hand-numbered digipak CD released by the bands (new!) imprint - Jackson Pistols Club.

There are two bonus tracks - 2004 recording of 'Instinct: Decay' track (the original version of this song, actually) "Keep Them Open", featuring guest vocals (and lyrics) by the legendary MkM of ANTAEUS and AOSOTH, and also the two members of BONE AWL appear as our rhythm section on bass and drum alongside myself on guitar. This recording was one of our two tracks contributed to a long sold-out, 2005 release - the KRIEG / NACHTMYSTIUM Split 7" EP (500 copies on Eerie Art Records, Italy RIP)

The second bonus track is a 2013 studio recording (from when we were making 'The World We Left Behind' LP) of Burzum's legendary 'Det Som Engang Var'. This song is responsible for inspiring me to create Nachtmystium when I was 16 in 1998. I bought a guitar and started playing once I had gotten my mind around Burzum's music. It remains endlessly inspiring to this day and this particular cover (we've done two others dating back to 2001!) is one of the best tracks we recorded, period, at 'The World We Left Behind' recording sessions and undoubtedly the best cover song - of which we've done several - that we've ever made.

Each digipak comes with an 11x17" folded poster of an old black & white promo photo of Noctis and I in a cemetery taking promotional photos for the "Unholy Terrorist Cult" demo CD-r (Vinland Winds Records, 2001) I dropped our original Christophe Szpajdel designed logo (circa 2000, he also did our later logo w/the pentagram in 2003) in gold on the top right. Each poster is signed in gold or silver ink by yours truly (unless you request one without!)

https://mysticnachtshop.myshopify.com/products/ancient-howls-of-dawning-fury-digipak-cd-poster-included
